Vodný tok Bystrica pramení severne od Banskej Bystrice, v neďalekej Kráľovej studni v Starohorských vrchoch, v nadmorskej výške približne 1260 m n. m. Potok Bystrica môžeme zaradiť do oblasti so snehovo-dažďovým typom režimu odtoku, s maximálnou vodnatosťou v mesiaci apríl, keď sa v horách topí sneh.

The source of Bystrica is located to the north of the town of Banská Bystrica, at around 1260m a.s.l. in the mountain range of Starohorské vrchy, at a place called Kráľova studňa (the King‘s Well). Its flow regime is that of a rain- and snow-fed river, with the water level reaching its maximum in April, when the snow melts in the mountains. From its source, Bystrica runs southward, with smaller tributaries emptying into the stream on both sides. It continues through the town and after a total of 22.9km empties into Hron at Stadlerovo nábrežie, at the altitude of 349m a.s.l. Today, locals know the stream as Bystrica, Bystrička or Bystrický potok. In the past, it was also called Harmanecký potok, Lira or Teja. The word “Bystrica“ means clean and fast-running water and it came to form part of the name of the town – Banská Bystrica.
