“Imrich Ďurica (1915–1992), a priest and canonist, worked in this building from 1982 to 1986. In the 1950s, he was unjustly sentenced by the communist regime to ten years in prison and to five years of loss of civil rights. He served his sentence in full in various prisons, including Jáchymov, where uranium ore was processed.”
This is the text on the plaque attached to the wall of the Parish Office at Námestie Štefana Moysesa. The life of father Ďurica is closely linked to Banská Bystrica. He studied here (1926–1934), worked as a secretary to bishop Andrej Škrábik (1949–1950) and was arrested here for his faith. During the period of political thaw he administered the cathedral (1969–1990) and the Parish Office (1982–1986). In the difficult period of normalization he was able to achieve a remarkable revival of spiritual life. He restored several church buildings. Bishop Jozef Feranec appointed him as canonist (1974). Father Ďurica was mentioned in connection with the occupation of the Bishop’s Office (1990). In 2015, he was awarded Honorary Citizenship in memoriam.
